Anime Semantle is a game of reading numbers, not guessing blindly. Once you understand what the similarity score actually means, you can cut your guess count dramatically. Every number in this guide is a real value measured from the game's own data.
1. How similarity is computed
Every anime and character is represented as a vector (embedding) produced by an AI language model. Similarity between two entries is precomputed as a weighted average of 70% structural information (genres, tags, production data) + 30% synopsis meaning. A high score means "close to the answer in genre, mood, and the shape of its story" — not in popularity or air date.
For each answer, only the closest 3,000 entries are stored. The full pool has ~3,100 entries, so if your guess falls in the most-distant bottom 3%, it shows as 0.000. That's not an error — it's the strongest hint in the game: "completely wrong direction."
2. How to read the score (measured reference table)
Real similarity distribution from a day when the answer was One Piece.
| Score | Meaning | Measured examples |
|---|---|---|
| 0.85+ | A character from the answer, or same franchise. Near-certain confirmation | Franky 0.933 · Nami 0.893 · One Piece Film: Strong World 0.855 |
| 0.65–0.85 | Top-100 range. Very close to the answer's family | rank-100 cutoff was 0.678 |
| 0.55–0.65 | Top-1,000 range. The broad category (e.g. shounen action) is right | Naruto: Shippuden 0.552 · Hunter×Hunter 0.551 |
| 0.40–0.55 | Wrong direction. Switch genres | Your Name. 0.490 · K-On! The Movie 0.464 |
| 0.000 | Most-distant bottom 3%. Eliminate the whole category | Haikyu!! 0.000 · Slam Dunk 0.000 (all sports anime) |
※ The distribution varies by answer. Use this table for intuition, and compare scores relative to each other within the same day for best results.
3. Opening: map the space with distant genres
Your first guesses aren't for winning — they're for drawing a map. Throw 4–5 representative titles from genres that are far apart and compare.
Recommended starter set — shounen action (One Piece · Attack on Titan), romance/drama (Your Name.), slice-of-life (K-On!), sports (Haikyu!!), mystery/thriller (Detective Conan · Death Note): pick 4–5.
Whichever direction scores highest is the answer's genre. As in the table above, if one direction clears 0.55 while the rest sit in the 0.4s, commit to that lane.
4. Once you have the lane: confirm with characters
Characters are the strongest tool in this game. In the measured data, 9 of the answer's (One Piece's) top 10 nearest entries were One Piece characters. When you're down to 2–3 candidate shows, type each one's protagonist.
- A candidate's character scores 0.85+ → that show is almost certainly the answer
- It stalls around 0.6 → not that show, but a similar one
- The tag on the right of each autocomplete entry tells you anime vs character
5. Franchise strategy
Movies and other seasons of the same franchise score very high (One Piece Film 0.855, same-series entries 0.917). If you suspect a long-running series, type any entry from it — clearing 0.85 confirms the franchise, and all that's left is figuring out which season or film.
6. Full walkthrough
A play-through with the answer being One Piece, using the real data as-is.
- Your Name. → 0.490. Not the emotional/romance direction.
- Haikyu!! → 0.000. Sports fully eliminated.
- Naruto: Shippuden → 0.552. Shounen action lane confirmed!
- Candidates in that lane: One Piece, Hunter×Hunter, Bleach…
- Nami (One Piece character) → 0.893. One Piece locked in.
- One Piece → 1.000. Solved in 6 guesses 🎉
7. Common mistakes
- Reading 0.000 as "missing data" — it's the opposite: the most reliable information you can get. Erase that entire category from your candidates.
- Stacking guesses with near-identical scores — adding a 0.56 next to a 0.55 gains you nothing. When unsure, probe a distant genre instead; elimination is information.
- Typing titles by hand instead of using autocomplete — spelling that differs from the registered form won't be recognized. Always pick from the autocomplete list.
- Treating characters as wasted guesses — characters are valid guesses and your best confirmation tool (see #4).
Genre deep dives
Romance and isekai are two of the easiest genres to misjudge in this game. See real data on their subgenres in the romance genre guide and isekai & fantasy genre guide.
