Sports Genre Guide

← Back to Game

Sports is not a big axis — 62 titles (7.8%) out of the 800-title answer pool. Yet those 62 are the hardest group in the game, and the reason is the opposite of what most players assume. This page measures all 62 alongside nine other genres to show why sports requires you to read the scoreboard differently.

1. Sports doesn't cluster tightly — its outside collapsed

Ten genres, measured the same way: the average similarity among titles sharing the tag (inside), and the average between that genre and everything else (outside). Franchise pairs (sequels, films) are excluded throughout.

GenreTitlesInsideOutsideGap

Action2950.5050.482+0.023
Drama2700.5150.494+0.021

Sports leads all ten on gap (+0.129). But look at how it leads. Sports-to-sports averages 0.512 — essentially the same as Drama (0.515) or Action (0.505). Sports titles are not unusually close to each other.

The unusual column is "outside." The other nine genres all sit between 0.480 and 0.519; sports alone drops to 0.383, a full 0.097 below the next lowest (Sci-Fi, 0.480). Sports tops the table not because its inside is close, but because its outside fell away.

2. What that looks like in play

On a day when the answer is a sports title, non-sports guesses barely move the needle. Averaged across all 62 sports titles, everything that isn't sports sits at 0.383 — where any other genre would put the same guesses at 0.48–0.52.

The ceiling is low too. These are the only non-sports titles that cracked the top ten of the three highest-rated anchors.

AnchorNon-sports title in its top 10Score
Haikyuu!! Karasuno Koukou vs. Shiratorizawa Gakuen KoukouYoukoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e 2nd Season0.651
Ashita no Joe 2Akagami no Shirayuki-hime 2nd Season0.625
Hajime no IppoShijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi0.620

For all three anchors, no non-sports title clears 0.65. Elsewhere 0.65 means "right family, not confirmed." Against a sports answer it is close to the best you can do from outside.

3. In exchange, it points the way more clearly than any genre

A distant outside means the reverse is also true: brush sports once and you will know it.

For 51 of the 62 sports titles, the closest non-franchise neighbor was also sports — chance would predict 8%. The three anchors likewise had 7, 9 and 9 sports titles among their ten closest. Once a sports signal appears, there is no better move than staying inside it.

4. But the ceiling inside is low as well

This is the second reason sports is hard, and it is a separate phenomenon from the first. Even with the direction right, the score stops climbing.

AnchorClosest neighborSports in top 10
Haikyuu!! Karasuno Koukou vs. Shiratorizawa Gakuen Koukou0.6999
Hajime no Ippo0.6939
Ashita no Joe 20.6917

All three stall at 0.69, and it isn't a coincidence. Across all 62, the median closest non-franchise neighbor is 0.679, and 63% never reach 0.70. In romance, anchor neighbors ran up to 0.855.

0.65 in sports is 0.78 anywhere else.

Half of all sports titles have no neighbor above 0.679 at all. Reading 0.65 as "still far" and switching directions is the most common mistake in this genre.

5. Why the outside is far — what's measured and what isn't

Counting genre tags across the 62: 44 of them (71%) carry Sports and nothing else. Pool-wide, only 21.3% of titles have a single genre tag, and sports averages 1.39 tags against a pool average of 2.46.

GroupAvg. tagsSingle-tag share
Sports1.3971.0%
Whole pool (793)2.4621.3%
Supernatural3.000.8%
Mystery3.481.6%

Tag count does track similarity. Grouping all 793 titles by tag count, average similarity to the whole pool rises from 0.418 at one tag to 0.482 at three (r = +0.342; still +0.245 with sports removed) — and the same direction holds within sports alone.

Within the 62TitlesAvg. vs non-sportsMedian closest neighbor
Tagged Sports only440.3450.678
Two or more tags180.4180.690

Holding the genre fixed, the multi-tag half sits 0.073 closer to the outside world. The sports titles nearest the rest of the pool are exactly the ones carrying Drama or Romance too — Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru (0.504), Chihayafuru (0.496).

Now look at the last column. More tags moves the median closest neighbor only from 0.678 to 0.690. Tag count lifts the average but not the ceiling. The low ceiling in section 4 is not explained by tag count, and this page has not measured what does explain it.

Note: these are correlations and a controlled comparison, not an experiment. Titles with more tags may genuinely cover more ground, and the tag strings themselves feed the similarity calculation (structural text 70% + synopsis 30%). The two paths were not separated.

6. The trap — many tags, and the model grabs the narrowest one

Steel Ball Run: JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken is tagged Action/Adventure/Mystery/Supernatural. No sports tag anywhere. Its actual neighbors:

Zero of its top ten share its own Supernatural genre. The answer isn't in the genres but the themes — the title carries Racing. Only 13 titles (1.6%) in the 800-title pool carry that theme, and six of the top ten came from those 13.

So a title with four genre tags may still be held by a single narrow, distinctive axis. The practical lesson: a sports-range score does not confirm a sports answer. It may be a non-sports title sharing a narrow theme like racing or combat.

Note: similarity here is computed from stored description text, and synopses are truncated to 500 characters at collection. Steel Ball Run's stored description is 500 characters of cross-country race setup; its supernatural elements fall past the cut.

7. Same genre, total strangers

Pairs that both carry the sports tag and sit farthest apart (franchises excluded).

0.203Diamond no Ace: Act II Second Season ↔ Yowamushi Pedal: Grande Road

Baseball and cycling: 0.203. In isekai even the most distant pair rarely fell below 0.440; sports splits about as wide as romance (0.201). "Sports" is not one neighborhood but several, divided by discipline. The themes riding along confirm it — Team Sports 56%, School 47%, Combat Sports 15%, Racing 10%.

8. Characters break the ceiling

Titles stall at 0.69. The characters belonging to them do not.

TitleTop characterCharacterClosest title
Hajime no IppoTakamura, Mamoru0.9050.693
Ashita no Joe 2Yabuki, Joe0.8400.691
Haikyuu!! Karasuno Koukou vs. Shiratorizawa Gakuen KoukouHinata, Shouyou0.8080.699

All three run 0.11 to 0.21 higher on the character side. In a genre where title guesses cap at 0.69, character names reach 0.9. Sports is the genre where closing with characters pays most.

Note: this isn't unique to sports — it holds pool-wide, with a belonging character outscoring the closest other title in 780 of 794 cases (98%). The protagonist isn't always the top scorer either, so it's worth trying supporting cast. Full data in When to Guess a Character.

9. Playbook

Step 1. Several guesses stuck under 0.4? Suspect sports. Against a sports answer, non-sports guesses average 0.383; in any other genre the same guesses cluster at 0.48–0.52. Scores pressed uniformly low is itself the signal.

Step 2. Once you brush sports, don't change direction. Its nearest-neighbor hit rate is 10.3× chance, the highest of the ten genres. Switching away costs you here.

Step 3. Re-read the scoreboard — 0.65 means you're nearly there. Half of all sports titles have no neighbor above 0.679, and 63% never reach 0.70. Judging by another genre's scale throws away a correct direction.

Step 4. Probe across disciplines. Sports titles run as far apart as 0.203. Ball games (Haikyuu, Slam Dunk, Ao Ashi), combat (Hajime no Ippo, Ashita no Joe), racing (Yowamushi Pedal, Uma Musume) and non-athletic contests (Chihayafuru) are different neighborhoods.

Step 5. Close with characters. Titles cap near 0.69 while belonging characters reach 0.8–0.9. That gap is at its widest in sports.

Measurement basis — 800-title answer pool, collected 2026-08-05. Similarity is cosine similarity over description-text embeddings; same-franchise pairs (sequels, films) are excluded from all aggregates. "Outside" and "avg. vs non-sports" are arithmetic means over all non-franchise titles; "closest neighbor" is the highest non-franchise similarity. Figures shift slightly as the data is refreshed.
